Despite popular demand, Pittsburgh’s WRCT-FM (88.3) will again ring out the old year by turning back the clock 40 years.
In a radio tradition that’s now more than a decade old, and which is tolerated by tens of dozens of listeners, WRCT’s resident oldies guru, Jay Thurber, will count down the top tunes of 1974 this Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
The broadcast also will be available online at www.wrct.org.
The countdown by Kindly Uncle Jay, Your Radio Pal™, who hosts an oldies program on WRCT on Saturday afternoons (www.jaythurbershow.com), will include 1974-current news reports, commercials and other announcements.
The “number one song of 1974” — as calculated by Jay from a completely scientific (ha! ha!) formula — will be unveiled just before 12 noon.

In addition to songs by artists with shows in Pittsburgh and songs from new releases, our December playlists will have the following themes:
December 5 – Tom Waits will be 65 on the 7th. We’ll help him celebrate by playing some of his tunes.
December 12 – We’ll focus on songs by local artists.
December 19 – Even though he doesn’t have religion, Kenny Joe is not happy about the commercial appropriation of Christmas. So once again, we’ll be putting the Christ back in Christmas by playing songs – some sacred, some profane – referring to Jesus of Nazareth.
December 26 – You’ll have to make do with automation – Kenny Joe will be away visiting the smallest state capital in the US.

Apologies for a three week gap in October broadcasts. I was actually in the studio for two of those weeks, but either I or the station was not functioning properly. We will redo the themes for the missed shows in November.
November 7 – Songs by folks born in October.
November 14 – Songs about going home (or not going home).
November 21 – Kenny Joe will be out of town.
November 28 – Songs by folks born in November.
