Interview with Ethan Rafal

Ethan Rafal is a San Francisco-based artist whose new book is called Shock and Awe.

Shock and Awe is a project that unfolded over the course of a twelve-year journey throughout the United States. What resulted is an autobiographical narrative that combines images, short stories, and found objects. Told from the perspective of a young adult coming of age in America in the wake of September 11^th, 2001, Rafal addresses the parallels between war abroad and an increasing sense of disillusionment domestically. Rafal’s work falls within the traditions of documentary photography and American traveling artists, and the book itself is a replica of the hand bound journal that he carried with him during his journey.

I was able to speak with Ethan Rafal about the processes that drove the creation of his new book. The following segments aired on WRCT on Tuesday, November 17, 2015.
